Bien-Air Nova Electric Handpiece is Cellerant Best of Class Technology Award-winner for Second Consecutive Year
The 2023 Cellerant Best of Class Technology Awards were unveiled September 1, and the Bien-Air Nova electric dental handpiece was named best of class electric dental handpiece for the second consecutive year. The Nova electric contra-angle is the only handpiece selected among this year’s Best of Class Technology Award-winners.
Cellerant Best of Class Technology Award Process
Considered the most prestigious technology award in dentistry, the Best of Class Technology Award is presented on an annual basis. The winners each year are selected by the Cellerant Best of Class committee, which is made up of a panel of dentistry technology leaders. This esteemed panel travels thousands of miles a year evaluating products at dental meetings, in dental offices, speaking to dentists, and visiting manufacturing facilities around the world to learn about the latest technologies.
2023 Cellerant Best of Class Technology Award Panel of Judges
This year’s panel of judges included Best of Class Technology Awards founder, Lou Shuman, DMD, CAGS, Paul Feuerstein, DMD, editor-in-chief of Dentistry Today, Pamela Maragliano-Muniz, DMD, editor-in-chief of Dentistry IQ, John Flucke, DDS, technology editor for Dental Products Report, Marty Jablow, DMD, known as America’s technology coach, and Chris Salierno, DDS, former chief editor of Dental Economics, and currently chief dental officer for Tend dental studios.
What Does it Mean for a Product to Be Designated Best of Class?
To be designated Best of Class, a technology is recognized for having revolutionized, simplified, or advanced the practice of dentistry in a distinctive way. These are the products moving us toward the future of dentistry.
Since the inception of the Best of Class Technology Awards 15 years ago, Bien-Air turbine handpieces, Bien-Air electric handpieces, and Bien-Air electric handpiece control systems have been recognized ten times as Best of Class. No other brand of turbine, electric dental handpiece, electric motor system, or implantology system has ever received the prestigious Best of Class Technology award.
Bien-Air’s track record of innovation and simplifying and advancing the practice of dentistry through better and more efficient handpieces and rotary instrumentation is unmatched

About this Year’s Award-Winning Handpiece: the Bien-Air Nova 1:5L M
Recognized for the second consecutive year, the Bien-Air CA Nova 1:5L Micro Series electric dental handpiece is arguably the most advanced handpiece in the world. It features an almost impossibly small head and slim handle for enhanced access and field of vision. Its exceptionally small size makes it easier to maneuver and reach those hard-to-reach places. Inside, the Nova electric handpiece is packed with technology so advanced that it sets a new standard for dentistry.
“I salute Bien-Air for coming up with a solution that allows you to have a very small head on this handpiece, but still have all the advantages of electrics. The science that is in this thing (Nova) is just amazing,” observed John Flucke, DDS and Best of Class Technology Award 2023 panel member.
“Most electric handpieces have large heads to accommodate the required gadgetry, but the Nova balances a small head and slim design with power and durability. It offers excellent access and visibility while preparing teeth, and stability and ergonomics for the dentist. In addition, the Nova has an anti-retraction valve in the head of the handpiece, meaning no bacteria will backflow into your tubing,” stated Pam Maragliano-Muniz, DMD, Editor-in-Chief, Dentistry IQ and Best of Class Technology Award 2023 panel member.
From the moment Bien-Air started designing the Nova handpiece, there were no compromises. The gear system is made of Cylcro gears that eliminate vibration and double the service life of the handpiece. Bien-Air’s Cylcro gears are made of the same material and the same type of designs that are used in high-end racing cars. Other dental handpieces may be made of stainless steel, but they are not stainless steel monobloc, which is distinctly more durable and holds up for years. For patient safety, the Nova features state-of-the-art anti-retraction technology, sealed head, and Cool Touch+ heat-arresting technology.
Attributes of the Award-Winning Bien-Air Nova Handpiece
Although the Nova has many important features, here are the key product attributes that contributed to the Bien-Air Nova being selected as a Cellerant 2023 Best of Class Technology Award winner:
Best of class: Smooth and Vibration-free Operation
Cylkro® gears are a gearing type used across many industries – including racing cars for exceptional transfer of power. Bien-Air is the first to incorporate this technology into dentistry. Its Cylkro® gears are key to the Nova handpiece’s smooth and vibration free operation.
Best of class: Smallest Electric Dental Handpiece Head with 4 Water Sprays
The only small head electric handpiece with 4 water sprays, the Nova can take on big jobs with both standard and short shank burs without over-heating the material being reduced.
Best of class: Dental Handpiece Anti-retraction Valve Technology
The Nova features the only sterilizable anti-retraction valve, which is sealed and prevents the risk of cross contamination—so necessary in this age of concern about viral transmission. If you do not know about Anti-retraction valves in handpieces or the reason it is so vitally important for the safety of your patients and your practice, please contact us.
Best of class: Coolest Electric Dental Handpiece for Enhanced Patient Protection
The Nova handpiece features Bien-Air’s patented Cool Touch+ ceramic insulated push-button. The handpiece push-button will not heat above human body temperature during operation if contact is made with soft tissue.
Best of class: Service Life
Physical vapor deposition (PVD) is a technology used in many industries to decrease temperature fatigue on metals. Bien-Air is the first to incorporate PVD technology into dentistry. It is applied to the chuck, which is the smallest mechanical component of any handpiece.
60 Years of Innovation, Performance, Superior Ergonomics
Drawing on 60 years of expertise, Bien-Air is on a constant quest for practical innovation, optimal ergonomics, and extreme reliability. We believe that the quality and reliability of our instruments underpin excellent dental outcomes.
Bien-Air extends its congratulations to the fellow Cellerant award recipients who are innovating to advance dentistry.
