Electric Advantage: Versatility

The variety of procedures performed in a “typical” day of dentistry is more significant than what most dentists pictured in their dental school days. From restorative dentistry to implants to crown and bridge procedures, there is incredible variety in the procedures dentists take on each day. That can be exciting—it keeps the work interesting!—but it also means investing in more equipment to properly complete each procedure. For this reason, the versatility of electric handpieces make them an essential tool in the modern dentist’s operatory.

With electric handpieces, there is no need for a separate motor. A dentist can perform restorative dentistry and implants with the exact same motor and handpiece, with both increases the effectiveness of a dentist during a procedure and enhances the variety of patients and procedures that a dentist sees on a day to day basis. In other words, the electric handpiece is versatile. For Marty Jablow, DMD—president of Dental Tech Advisors and owner of The Dentists of Woodbridge, located in Woodbridge, NJ—integrating the Bien-Air electric handpiece was a game-changer. As a user and advocate for electric handpieces, Dr. Jablow speaks highly of the benefits and advantages of Bien-Air electrics, especially the versatility that they allow a dentist to have in his or her own practice.

Since Bien-Air products have separate motors, dentists have complete customization over their handpieces and the way they are used during procedures.

“Electric handpieces allow me to fine tune whatever procedure I'm doing to my specifications,” Dr. Jablow shared. “You also get speed. Because of the increased torque, you've got a lot more speed in doing your procedure. Instead of cutting a tooth, you're basically milling a tooth. Beyond that, you also have the ability to make the patient more comfortable, there's less vibration and less noise which many patients perceive as painful. So, we're trying to make the patient more comfortable and making ourselves more efficient.”

In his experience, Dr. Jablow has seen the greatest benefit of electric handpieces in performing crown and bridge procedures. He is able to grossly cut the tooth and change the speed of the handpiece in order to have complete control over the procedure.

“That’s not something that’s possible with an air driven handpiece,” Jablow said. “You can’t set the speed on an air handpiece; you regulate it with your foot pedal. You just don’t get the advantage of precise control like with an electric handpiece.”

Electric handpieces allow for a versatility in dentistry that was before undiscovered. Separate motors allow for dentists to use one handpiece for multiple different procedures and allow for dentists to be quicker and more efficient between patients.
